SUN: Skarù·ręʔ Urihwaká·yę̀·ʔ Nyakwarihwatù·ręh
The mission of Skarù·ręʔ Urihwaká·yę̨̀·ʔ Nyakwarihwatù·ręh (SUN) — The Tuscarora Historical and Preservation Society is to honor and sustain the living heritage of the Tuscarora Nation. Skarù·ręʔ Urihwaká·yę̀·ʔ Nyakwarihwatù·ręh (SUN) represents and serves the Tuscarora people of the Three Bands — Prospect, Maxton and Saddletree — in Robeson County, North Carolina, which constitute the sole political body of Tuscarora who remained in North Carolina and where our Council Fire was moved by our chiefs from Indian Woods Tuscarora Reservation in Bertie County, NC in the 18th century.
Our work is rooted in the authority and traditions of these longhouse communities, which together continue the survival and sovereignty of the Tuscarora Nation in our homelands. While SUN is independent as a nonprofit organization, it exists to strengthen and uplift the people of the Three Bands, honoring their history, language and cultural continuity. Though SUN is newly established, it is the natural extension of individuals who have dedicated their lives to the restoration of the Tuscarora Nation. Guided by ancestral vision and contemporary responsibility, SUN works to:
- Revitalize Language through immersive education and community-driven literacy initiatives.
- Preserve History through archival research.
- artifact conservation and the protection of oral traditions.
- Validate Lineage through rigorous genealogical and DNA research that affirms Tuscarora sovereignty and continuity.
- Steward Ancestral Lands by promoting traditional ecological knowledge and collaborative land-care practices.
- Safeguard Sacred Heritage by enforcing NAGPRA and related laws to ensure the respectful return of ancestors and cultural belongings.
Rooted in Tuscarora values and aligned with international Indigenous rights standards, SUN nurtures cultural resilience, strengthens community pride, and secures the rightful place of the Tuscarora people in history — past, present and future.
