🪶 Our Legacy

For years, SUN Founders have carried sacred work forward with honor. We have organized public presentations, taught language classes and hosted cultural gatherings. Each act has been a way to honor our ancestors and prepare a foundation for the generations to come.

These efforts are the roots from which SUN now grows, expanding into new programs and outreach made possible by nonprofit support.

Skarù·ręʔ Urihwaká·yę̀·ʔ Nyakwarihwatù·ręh (SUN) is a nonprofit organization dedicated to the preservation, revitalization and teaching of Tuscarora history, language and culture. While SUN is newly formed as a 501(c)(3), it is the natural extension of individuals who have devoted their lives to sustaining the Tuscarora Nation of North Carolina. Our nonprofit status enables us to continue and expand this work — providing resources, programs and partnerships that ensure our cultural survival and visibility for generations to come.

Over the past several years, SUN members have already achieved significant successes. We have organized and delivered public presentations in Raleigh, NC, focusing on Tuscarora history and treaties as they specifically apply to those who remained in our North Carolina homelands. We have taught and promoted the Tuscarora language, both through longhouse instruction and online classes, building one of the few living spaces where our language continues to be spoken and learned. We have hosted conferences on Tuscarora history, genealogy and culture, bringing together citizens and allies to deepen our shared understanding and strengthen our Nation. These efforts are the foundation upon which SUN now builds, expanding into new areas of outreach and preservation with the resources that nonprofit status provides.

🌾 Our Work

We do not wait for change — we make it happen. SUN focuses on three interwoven commitments:

  • Language — teaching and speaking Tuscarora, one of the rarest Iroquoian languages still alive today.
  • History — documenting treaties, genealogies and the survival story of Tuscarora families who remained in North Carolina.
  • Community — creating spaces for learning and gathering, from public presentations in Raleigh to longhouse teaching and national conferences.

✨ Looking Forward

We envision a future where Tuscarora children know their language, where our history is represented accurately and where our Nation’s presence is honored in our homeland and beyond.

This is sacred work. We invite all who honor truth and tradition to walk with us.
